Water softener plumbed with a bypass beside a water heater

Water Softener Loop Installation: What It Is and How It Works

A softener loop is the plumbing stub-out that lets a softener be added to a house later. If your home has one, installation is simple. If not, a plumber can add one. Here is what to know.

What a softener loop is

A softener loop is a section of pipe near where the main water line enters the house, usually in the basement or utility room, with valves that let the water bypass or pass through a softener. It often has an outlet for power and a drain nearby.

Builders add loops to many homes so a softener can go in without cutting into the main line. If your house has a capped or bypassed section of pipe near the main with a spare outlet, you likely have one.

Parts of a softener installation

A proper installation has all of these. A loop with a missing drain is only half ready.

Softener loop components
PartWhat it doesWhy it matters
Inlet and outlet valvesControl water in and out of the softener.Let you isolate the unit.
Bypass valveSends water around the softener.Keeps water flowing during service.
Hose connectionsConnect to the softener head.Leaks happen here, so quality fittings matter.
Drain lineCarries regeneration water away.Needs an air gap and a proper drain.
Brine overflowSafety path for the brine tank.Prevents flooding if the tank overfills.

Why test your tap before you buy

A softener removes hardness minerals. It does not fix every water problem, and not every home needs one. The first step is a test of hardness at the tap. Many homes do fine without a softener.

If hardness is high, a softener reduces scale on fixtures and appliances. If the complaint is chlorine taste, a carbon filter is the tool. Our water softener and filtration page explains the choices.

Sizing, salt and ongoing costs

A softener is sized by household size and hardness. A unit that is too small regenerates too often and wastes salt. A unit that is too large costs more than it needs to. Your plumber or dealer can size it from your test result and number of people.

Ongoing costs are salt and a little water and power for regeneration. Choose a demand-initiated unit, which regenerates based on use instead of a timer. Salt comes in pellets or blocks, and the unit's manual tells you which to use.

Keep the salt level above the water line in the brine tank, and look for a hard crust on the salt surface. If you see one, break it up so the brine can form.

Local note

What we can and cannot say about Vernon Hills water

Vernon Hills water comes from Lake Michigan through the Paul M. Neal Water Treatment Facility in Lake Bluff, delivered by Lake County Public Works. The utility's water quality report lists chlorine at about 1 ppm, fluoride at 0.6 ppm and lead below the action level. It does not give a hardness value that we would rely on.

That is why we say test your tap. A home test or lab report tells you your actual hardness. Regeneration water goes to the drain, so confirm drain rules with the village building department at 847-367-3700 if you are unsure.

Installing a softener on a loop

With a loop in place, the installer sets the softener, connects the inlet and outlet hoses, runs the drain line with an air gap, plugs in power and programs hardness and regeneration time. The unit is then filled with salt and regenerated once to check operation.

If you have no loop, a plumber cuts into the main line, adds valves and a bypass, and then installs the unit. That adds time but is a normal job. Our plumbing installation page describes similar work.

Bypass during service and emergencies

If the softener leaks or fails, turn the bypass valve so water flows around it. That keeps the house supplied while you wait for service. Mark the bypass handles so everyone in the house knows which way is open.

A leaking hose or a cracked valve head can drip onto the floor for days if no one notices. Check around the unit when you refill the salt. If you see water, bypass the unit and call.

Service and common problems

Common problems include salt bridges, which stop regeneration, a clogged injector, a stuck valve and leaks at hose fittings. Most are fixable. Check the salt level monthly, and clean the brine tank once a year.

A softener also affects water heaters, because softer water reduces scale. See our water heater replacement page for how scale shortens tank life. Homes in Mundelein and nearby areas can have different hardness, so test where you live.

Rules and guidance note

Follow the maker's installation guidelines. A softener loop ties into supply and drain piping, so the connections follow the Illinois State Plumbing Code that the village cites. The drain connection should be set so wastewater cannot flow back.

Check with the Village of Vernon Hills building department at 847-367-3700 about permit needs.

Questions

Softener loop questions

Pipe near the main that lets a softener be added without cutting into the water line. It usually includes valves, a bypass, a drain and an outlet.

Not necessarily. Test your tap for hardness. Scale and spots are the common signs.

To a floor drain or standpipe with an air gap. Confirm local rules with the building department.

Yes. A plumber adds valves and a bypass to the main line.

The utility report we reviewed does not give a figure we would rely on, so test your own tap.
