When a water line problem is an emergency

The water service line runs underground from the utility connection to your house. When it breaks, you may lose water completely, see a wet or sinking patch in the yard, or hear water running with every fixture off. A break on a pressurized line moves a lot of water quickly.

Emergency water line repair in Vernon Hills starts with confirming where the problem is. We check the meter, the main valve and the pressure, then locate the leak. If the break is on the utility side of the meter, we tell you and give you the information to report it.

What to do while you wait

  • Close the main water valve inside the house. If water keeps flowing past it, the leak may be before the valve.
  • Keep people and vehicles off soft or sinking ground over the line.
  • Check the meter with all fixtures off. A moving meter means water is leaving.
  • Take photos of wet areas and note when you first noticed them.
Warning signs

Signs of a failing water service line

Buried pipes hide their problems. These signs are the usual clues.

Sudden loss of pressure

A break or large leak steals pressure before the water reaches your taps.

A wet, green or sinking area in the yard

Water escaping a buried line softens the soil.

A meter that moves with everything off

Flow after the main is closed inside points to the line.

Discolored or dirty water

Disturbed sediment or a break can allow dirt into the line.

Rising water bills

A slow leak can run for weeks before anything surfaces.

Repair or replace the line

Which method fits depends on the pipe material, the depth and what is above it. We explain the options and the trade-offs.

Lead service lines and what is underground

Older service lines in some communities contain lead. Lake County Public Works has a lead service line inventory and plan in development, with a final plan and inventory due in April 2027 and an interactive map on the county website at lakecountyil.gov. If we expose your line, we note the material and tell you what we see.

A line made of copper, plastic or galvanized steel needs different handling than lead. If you are replacing a line, ask the utility about its program and whether any part of the work is coordinated. Public Works can be reached at 847-377-7500.

Low pressure and pressure regulators

Low pressure has several causes. A partly closed valve, a clogged filter or aerator, a failing pressure regulator, a corroded galvanized pipe or a leak can each reduce flow. We check pressure at an outdoor spigot, then trace the cause.

Many homes have a pressure-reducing valve near the main. When it fails, pressure can swing too high, which stresses pipes and appliances, or too low. Replacing the valve is a short job. If the interior pipes are the problem, our repiping page covers the larger fix.

Permits and utility coordination

Work on the service line may involve the village and the water provider. Rules vary with where the line is cut, whether it crosses the public right of way and whether a permit is required. We check current requirements before digging and coordinate with the right office.

The Village of Vernon Hills building department can be reached at 847-367-3700, and Lake County Public Works at 847-377-7500. The line from the meter to the house is generally the owner's responsibility, while the utility maintains its own side. We confirm which applies to you. If the leak is inside, leak detection explains how we find it.

What it costs

What water line repair costs

A spot repair, a trenchless replacement and a full trench are very different jobs. We give a clear price before work starts after locating the problem, and we explain what drives the number.

Insurance sometimes covers service line damage through an optional endorsement. Ask your insurer, and check whether the utility offers any repair or replacement program.

Code and permits note

According to Lake County Public Works, the utility side ends at the meter. The line from the meter to your house is private, and repairs to it are plumbing work under the Illinois State Plumbing Code. Lake County Public Works handles the utility side up to the meter.

Ask the Village of Vernon Hills building department at 847-367-3700 about permit needs before digging.

Questions

Water line questions from Vernon Hills homeowners

Yes. Our line is answered 24 hours a day, every day. If water is spraying, the yard is flooding or the house has no water, we talk you through the shutoff and send a technician. Same-day appointments are offered when available for slow leaks.

Generally the owner is responsible for the pipe from the meter to the house. The utility handles its own side. We help you confirm which part is leaking.

Check with the utility, which is building an inventory, or have a plumber look at the pipe where it enters the house. A magnet and a scratch test can help, but a visual check by a professional is better.

Not if we can avoid it. We locate the leak first and use trenchless methods when they fit.

Common causes are a partly closed valve, a failing regulator, clogged aerators, corroded pipes or a leak. We test the pressure and trace it.
